Weekend Highlights

Hi guys – popping in for some weekend highlights today. One of the biggest highlights was a really nice hike out at Mason Neck State Park – nature is my happy place and it felt good to get away (even though it’s not that far away – about 1 hour from DC) and enjoy the scenery and nature.

We spent a few hours on the trails there with a group of good friends. Matt took this picture and was joking that if we had a band, this would be the album cover. 🙂

The sunset was stunning – the others had to head out but Matt and I stuck around to take it in. Beautiful and so peaceful.

Another weekend highlight was cheering on runners in the Marine Corps Marathon finish area, and stopping by to say hello to my Watermelon Board friends who were there giving out watermelon to runners and spectators after the race. As you guys know, I’m partnering with them again this year and Matt and I were supposed to run the 10k as part of Team Watermelon, but we ended up giving our bibs away for obvious reasons (#pregnancy). Those of you who won one of our 10k bibs, or one of the full marathon bibs I gave away – how did the race go? It was a little warm out there but I hope you guys had fun races. 🙂

Also – how cool are these carved watermelons they had at their booth?! So creative!

They challenged me and Matt to carve watermelons this year for Halloween, and we’re going to do it next weekend – I’m excited! I think we’ll take the traditional hollow out the middle approach, though, because I want to eat the watermelon inside…

Random sidenote – I got a ton of compliments on my shoes while I was out wandering around the finish area, and it made me realize that even though I’ve worn them a ton I had forgotten to write about them! My friends at Brooks gifted them to me as part of my Run Happy Ambassadorship. They are the Brooks Revel shoes (affiliate link), and they are made to go from your morning run straight to your errands/around town adventures while still looking good. They are really comfortable and cushion-y, and I love the pattern and the fact that they match everything! They look good with jeans, too. 🙂

And while we’re talking about Brooks, I wanted to mention that they came out with a new pattern in my old fave Ghost Crops (aff link)! I LOVE these tights – they have a nice and high waist, stay put really well, wick sweat nicely (without showing sweat), and are really lightweight and breathable. And the new pattern is insanely cute.

ALSO – if you’re looking for a good lightweight fall rain running jacket, check out the new Canopy Jacket (aff link) – it’s really soft and cozy, not stiff or heavy like some rain jackets can be.

The rest of the weekend highlights were food-related – brunch at Lyon Hall with friends (those donuts were awesome)…

And lunch at Lebanese Taverna. Hummus, pita bread, and I are still having a moment.

Time to get back to work – lots on my to do list today. It’s a dreary day here today which kind of matches my mood… feeling pretty drained both emotionally and physically. I’m treating myself to a lunchtime yoga class in a bit though so hoping that leaves me feeling a bit restored.

I hope you guys had a nice weekend – if you ran MCM full or 10k, let me know how it went! And for my fellow dietitians, I hope you are having fun (but not too much fun without me) at FNCE this year! My first year missing it since I started going in 2013…!

Looks like a great weekend to also keep your mind busy. How was saying goodbye to Ashe on Sunday?

She actually ended up leaving us on Friday... as it turned out a few staffers from the rescue org were in DC last week for a work event, and driving back to Asheville on Friday, so they offered to take her with them then. As you can imagine, it was extremely hard and sad. Now we're just trying to move on.

The marathon was HOT! Not as bad as you had it last year, but not good. The first half through Rock Creek wasn't bad, because it was still relatively cool and shady. But the second half around Haines Point, DC, and Arlington was pretty miserable in the much warmer temps and full Sun. Had to seriously recalibrate my expectations around miles 17 - 18, but managed to finish it. The first marathon is always a PR, right? Your weekend of hiking sounds like was much more fun! :)

Congrats on your first marathon!! I was thinking of those later miles like the bridge and Haines Point... so rough with that hot sun. Way to power through!

How was saying goodbye to Ashe? Did you notice your other dog having a hard time adjusting? It seems y'all were out and about to get your mind off of things... that is probably best! I know it was such a hard and super sad situation for you guys. I'm sure it was hard on your other dog, too. Are dogs allowed on any of the hikes y'all frequently go on? Wasn't sure if you all ever did dog friendly activities, too! Love that you're staying so active and busy throughout your pregnancy. You're glowing!

It was terrible saying bye to her - I honestly just don't want to talk/write about it anymore because it makes me cry and I need to move on and try to be less stressed for the baby. Freyja has been totally fine, which is good - she came with us on the hike on Sunday and had a blast on the trails. She loved meeting our friends, too.

Those donuts, DAYYY-UMM! Those leggings are adorable, and that state park sounds incredible! I'd definitely want to check it out with some friends sometime. Hope this week gives you the opportunity to recharge :)

I've followed your blog for well over two years and as a dog mom of two rescues, I just can't continue. I truly hope you've learned a lot from the mistakes made (and obviously we all make them). Dogs aren't decisions to be made on a whim.
