DC Cherry Blossom Fun

Hi friends!

We’ve had a lot of adventures since I last checked in! Matt’s parents (who are fully vaccinated now, woo!!) arrived for a visit on Friday evening, and from Saturday to Tuesday Matt and I drove down to NC for a little babymoon! We had a really nice time and I’ll share a recap soon; stay tuned.

For now, I wanted to share some pictures from Cherry Blossom fun here in DC!

Cherry blossom time is one of my favorite times in DC – it’s so beautiful!

Normally I do a sunrise run down to the cherry blossoms on a weekday, but that wasn’t going to happen this year (I’m 32 weeks pregnant now with baby number 2, in case you missed it – here’s my most recent update from 28 weeks!).

But, I didn’t want to miss them just because I couldn’t see them at sunrise (which is, IMO, the best time to see them for sure – it’s SO beautiful and also there aren’t many other people – here’s are pics from my 2019 sunrise run to the cherry blossoms).

I heard from friends that the parking areas around the blossoms were blocked off but that pedestrians were allowed this year, so on Wednesday, Matt took the day off work and we took Riese and his parents downtown to see the Washington Monument and the cherry blossoms at the nearby tidal basin!

We found parking on the National Mall after driving around for a bit, and walked from there over to the Washington Monument.

Riese was super excited to see it in person after reading about it in some of her books, and after seeing it a lot from afar while driving by across the river!

I miss this view – I don’t come down to the mall much these days since I’m not running!

After the Washington monument, we walked over to the tidal basin. The tulips were out and looking beautiful, too!

The cherry blossoms peaked REALLY quickly this year due to warm temps, so we were a couple days past the prime, but they still looked lovely.

And a gray weekday morning with rain in the forecast meant there weren’t crowds (yes, we masked up when close to others)!

We attempted a cute family picture with the blossoms and this was the best we got. 😉

Riese was really excited to be down there. These ducks were a huge hit!

Such a fun morning exploring our city – it had been too long since we’d done something like that!

Matt’s parents left yesterday afternoon, and we were sorry to see them go!

We had a couple yummy meals together before they went – one night we kept it simple and ordered pizza; another night Matt’s dad grilled up some pork chops for us.

Served with sweet potato, spinach salad, veggies, and some of his homemade olive bread!

I hope you have a great weekend and I’ll see you back here on Monday!

Have you ever seen the DC cherry blossoms?

Those blossoms! So fleeting but so beautiful. A renewed gift every year. I’m glad you made it into Washington to see them with the family!

Miss those blossoms. It's so sad; Georgetown sent us home for the semester just a few weeks before they were supposed to bloom last year because of the pandemic, and since it was my senior year, it'll take a dedicated trip to see them again in the future. Will have to make it happen :D Also, you should ask Matt's dad for permission to post some of his recipes here! I'm very intrigued by the olive bread personally ;)

Ugh, that's such a bummer about the blossoms and timing! Hopefully you'll be able to come back and visit in the future :) I'll ask my father-in-law for the olive bread recipe, stay tuned!

Okay, apparently the Kalamata Olive Bread recipe is from a book called "A Passion for Bread." I believe it's a sourdough bread, so definitely not a quick bread. Learning how to make homemade sourdough bread has been his quarantine project. :)
