Long Weekend Outings + Adventures

Hi all! We had a super long (a little too long, to be honest…) weekend last weekend – the kids were off school on Friday, Monday, AND Tuesday. We decided not to go anywhere because we did so many trips in the fall and it’s just been nice to stay put for a minute, but by Saturday we were kind of regretting that decision a bit. 😉

The kids were going stir crazy so we ended up deciding to get out as much as possible for fresh air the rest of the weekend as it always helps everyone’s moods. It was a chilly but sunny weekend – the sun always helps a lot for me with wanting to go outside!

On Sunday morning we took a family outing to Huntley Meadows, one of our local favorites.

Yes, Wes is still in shorts (he’s obsessed).

He loves the woods. And of course had to have a walking stick like Daddy and Riese!

We saw this really cool bird – a blue heron, I think?

Riese is into sprinting/running really fast right now, and after the boardwalk area the loop ends with a long flat stretch (maybe 1 or 1.5 miles worth) in the woods, so she and I raced for most of it with lots of breaks interspersed. It was super fun – I love running with her. Can’t wait to do more of it as she gets older!

Riese and I also got out for a big hike on Monday morning with my friend Jen and her two kids. We met up in Potomac Overlook park which is another favorite because the kids love all the rock scrambling down by the creek.

Wes stayed at home with Matt because the rock scrambling would’ve been too much for him, and also so Riese and I didn’t have to rush back for his nap time. We had such a blast out there!

For our picnic lunch mid-hike I packed us our favorite tuna salad with avocado – Riese loves it.

Plus some unpictured string beans and clementines!

In other long weekend news, my high school bestie Jenny was in town visiting! We had a girl’s night out with her sister Gretchen and our friend Lara from high school. I always love hanging with these ladies.

We went to Wren in Tysons and the food was absolutely delicious (but the company was of course the best part). As usual when we are together, we ordered a whole slew of stuff and shared everything. Here is just a sampling of some of the items we enjoyed, not everything!

We also had a really fun big group play date (again just me and Riese – Wes and Matt stayed home) the next day. There were 10 kids between all of us and they had an absolute blast. Riese and I arrived at 2:30 and didn’t leave until 7:30! Wish we all lived closer and could do that all the time.

I don’t have a ton of home cooked food pictures to share with you this week as we honestly ate out a lot due to all the socializing, and when we were home we just had basics. But I did snag a picture of this stir fry we had one night. Always a win!

Yum. If you need sauce ideas, see this post: mix + match stir fry recipes.

And yes, that’s avocado in the stir fry (added just before serving)! We’ve been eating a LOT of avocado lately because Matt accidentally bought 3 BAGS of avocados instead of 3 avocados via our grocery delivery order last week! Whoops!

In addition to some avocado tuna salad sandwiches enjoyed with Riese, I’ve had lots of avocado toast, lots of avocado on top of basic lunch grain salad bowls, avocado smoothies (avocado is surprisingly good in smoothies, I promise), and also some omelettes with avocado. I don’t hate all the avocado, I’ll be honest!

I hope you have a great weekend, friends. I’ll see you back here on Tuesday with a new recipe!

Lots of fun time in the fresh air! And what is it about boys (and men) always wanting to wear shorts in sub-freezing temperatures?! I want that pictured omelet, by the way!

I don't use it that often (I do use the app for yoga a few times a month, but I rarely use the bike as I just really would rather do my cardio outside if possible, and I like my local studio for in-person group fitness classes) - but Matt uses the Peloton consistently 2 or 3 times a week and loves it.
