Enjoying the treadmill?!

Guys, something crazy happened yesterday. Actually, two crazy things. First – the treadmill won out over running outside for the first time in literally, oh, 2 years or so.

And second, even crazier – I actually really enjoyed it. Who am I?!

Don’t worry, I don’t plan on this blog becoming photos of treadmills instead of pretty early morning sunrises, but for some reason yesterday it just worked. The thought of putting on a thousand layers of clothes and freezing my butt off just wasn’t appealing, and I didn’t have a running buddy lined up, so I decided to give our little apartment gym treadmill a go. It was so glorious wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and part of the reason the run was so nice was because I watched an episode of Gossip Girl on Netflix on my phone while I was running. I was planning to do a shorter run but I got so into the episode I decided to keep going! It was such a nice little mental break from the day to just zone out watching the show and run. I’ll have to remember to bribe myself with trashy TV next time the treadmill is necessary….

Anyway! Between a ton of new AnneTheRD clients, the running clinic I hosted over at Pacers on Monday night with the Endurance Athlete Center, and prepping for and teaching my course at GW, it’s been a VERY busy week! My corporate wellness clients are ramping up again now, too, now that it’s the new year; yesterday morning, I worked a breakfast event at an office downtown from 7:30 to 10:30. I was in their café talking to those passing through about how to build a better breakfast!

Those who were interested swung by and listened about making sure to include not only an adequate amount of calories in breakfast so you don’t crash before lunch, but also some specific types of food paired together to increase satiety. Including a combination of protein (eggs, nuts, dairy, etc.), fiber (grains or veggies), and fruit in breakfast can go a long way in keeping you full. It was fun to get out and about and do something different, and those who talked to me got a free piece of fruit for listening. ;) Want more tips? In other news, I made one of my absolute favorite dinners on Tuesday night – Almond Encrusted Tilapia, inspired by the Winter Shape Up meal plan I put together for everyone (it’s featured on there). It actually ended up being almond encrusted catfish, because that’s what I had on hand from one of our WSU sponsors, Sizzlefish, and it was just as good! You know this recipe rocks when it makes Matt actually enjoy fish. :) I encrusted it in ground flaxseed instead of flour to mix it up!

On the side, some roasted broccoli, just tossed in a little garlicky olive oil and some salt/pepper. Roasted broccoli is a thousand times tastier than boiled broccoli, in my opinion. Yum.

I threw some leftover black beans on the side, too, for a little extra volume and flavor. Such a good combination and a satisfying dinner!

And now, back to work! Have a wonderful day, my friends, and please continue to share your awesome check ins over on the Winter Shape Up Week 1 Meal Plan! I’m loving reading them, and each comment (up to 1 per day) is another entry into the contest to win a package of goodies from Sabra, this week’s featured sponsor!

I always loved getting into the “zone” on the treadmill where I was too busy listening to a book-on-tape or singing along to some music to notice the miles go by.
Hated the treadmill because it felt like “cheating” but it was better than skipping a run due to heat/sandstorm.
Glad to see hardcore runners like you use it once in a while too.
    Love the site!

The fish looks delicious! I’ve never attempted catfish at home. I’ll have to try it next time it’s on sale at the fish counter. I love that you gave away fruit at your breakfast table – I would have definitely stopped by!

  4. 6

I have to disagree with you… Gossip Girl is NOT trashy TV! ;)

  5. 8

I’m up North and have been doing my first month of Half training on my treadmill. Scandal, if you don’t watch it already is awesome and addicting! I only “allow” myself to watch it while I run on the treadmill so sometimes I can’t wait to run b/c I want to watch the show!

I could totally believe the treadmill winning out over outside–it’s been downright arctic lately! Something on Netflix is a decent bribe for me to get on a piece of cardio equipment to change up my cardio routine.

What do you do for corporate wellness? That sounds really interesting! Is it through your Anne the RD business?

Yep! I do a mix of working as the RD at corporate health fairs, nutrition seminar lunch and learns, stuff like I did yesterday, etc!

  7. 11

Watching Gossip Girl on the treadmill is one of my favorite pastimes! I’d rather run outside too, but the treadmill can be sooo convenient!

  8. 12

I actually end up running on the treadmill a lot. It’s more fun to get outside – I especially love when I can get out to the beach before or after work – but I’m not super keen on running in my neighborhood, especially after work when it’s already dark by 5:30. When the time changes I’ll probably get back outside. In the meantime, my iPod and I know how to party it up on the treadmill. As long as I have the right music/entertainment, I can usually get in 3+ miles before losing motivation.

I also normally prefer an outdoor run to a treadmill one. With this freezing weather however, treadmills having been my best friend lately. Can’t wait for spring running though!

It has to be really cold for the treadmill to be attractive! Well done — and awesome looking tilapia, too!

  11. 15

I did a 3.6 mile run on the treadmill yesterday, and I think that might be my longest treadmill yet. Normally I don’t run more than 3.1 there, but TV definitely helps :)

  12. 16

Once I started running outside, I never went back to using a treadmill. However, in hotel gyms or when its really bad weather, they do the trick. I also live where there are no hills, and treadmills are great for doing hill repeats.

  13. 18

I love switching back and forth between running outside and the treadmill. Outside is always nicer, but it’s a good little brain trick sometimes to switch to the treadmill!

  14. 19

I made the fish the other night as well!!
    Great run on the treadmill!!

  15. 20

I agree, Roasted Broccoli is the Best!!

  16. 21

It doesn’t matter if gossip girl is trashy tv, it makes time flies and it keeps you entertained while running on a treadmill!! I won’t deny that it was my guilty pleasure, but it doesn’t make it the greatest show either!
Treadmill can be boring sometimes, and obviously running outside is better, but it offers the convenience of avoiding cold runs or lonely runs!!

  17. 22

Watching trashy tv on the treadmill always helps pass the time. It’s been freezing here in WI. I’ve only ran outside twice this winter. Today, I tried out the healthy tuna salad for lunch. My co-worker and I split it (I made 2 servings) and we both LOVED it! Keep the awesome recipes coming!
