Pumpkin Breakfasts + Recipe Page Advice, Please!

Good morning guys! I hope those of you in Houston area are staying safe in the hurricane… thinking of you. <3

It’s still feeling more like fall than August over here, which inspired me to rock some pumpkin-y breakfasts over the past few days. Did you know that my favorite flour free breakfast pancake recipe also has a pumpkin variation? Here it is: Gluten Free Pumpkin Pancake Recipe. It even has a little recipe video to show you how to make it! I decided to bring it back on Sunday morning – just as delicious as I remembered. I added some raw rolled oats (about 1/4 cup – add a little extra pumpkin if it’s too dry) to the mix for this variation, too – I like that chew!

It can be made in the microwave, too – just microwave 3 to 4 minutes or until cooked through, et voila! I made the microwave variation this morning and topped it with some cottage cheese and blueberries. This time I just added the oats on top!

Before crushing my microwave pancake this morning, I was working up a sweat with Kathleen and Chelsea! Workout buddies are the best – there’s NO way I’d still be going to boot camp/strength classes at 28 weeks pregnant without the motivation from these two. We are loving Next Phase Studio (in Arlington, via ClassPass <- affiliate link for $30 off) – their instructors are great about giving me modifications and it’s always a tough, varied circuit workout!

I’m modifying most everything to be low impact now just because jumping doesn’t feel great/seem smart, and of course I’m avoiding anything on my back or stomach as well. It actually hasn’t been that hard to come up with modification ideas (with the instructor’s assistance) though – there’s always something I can still do that challenges me safely! I’m also dialing down the speed/intensity of everything – not trying to push myself to the max right now, obviously!

Anyway – I’m working from home today and in addition to some AnneTheRD client calls, one of the big things on my to do list is to move over to a new recipe plugin! It’s time to move on from Recipage (there are some technical details that won’t be compatible with an update I need to do on my site’s back end, and I feel like it’s time to update to a newer/more user friendly plugin, anyway). While I’m in the process of switching, I’d love some feedback from you guys! Questions for you:

  • What do you like/not like about my current recipe page (both the category page with the lists under each category, as well as the Recipage searchable recipe page)? The category page will likely stay even with the new recipe plugin, but the Recipage searchable one will go away and be potentially replaced by another searchable page, unless you guys think the category page I already have suffices?
  • If you have strong preferences either way, I’d love to hear how I can make my recipe page and recipe search functions more user-friendly for you guys! If you have examples of blogs that have awesome recipe pages, please share links to those, too!
  • Any other thoughts, perhaps about how the recipes appear within blog posts? (For an example, check out my old fave Hard Boiled Egg and Cheddar Muffins blog post – the recipe is near the end of the post). Anything you especially like included in recipes besides the obvious ingredients, how much it makes, print function, etc? I’m not adding nutritional info (you guys know I’m not a fan of calorie counting, so this doesn’t feel like an appropriate thing to add to my recipes when I’m promoting intuitive eating), but otherwise open to suggestions!

Thank you in advance for your feedback! 🙂

Hi Anne, I love your blog and am a long time reader. This isn't feedback about the recipe page (I've never had an issues with it!) but this recent addition of the video that pops out for the flour-free pancake is driving me nuts.

I agree - it seems to be the new "in" thing with blogs but it's SO annoying and makes loading the page really slow

I'll ask my ad network to leave the videos on the sidebar for now vs. having them show up in the posts. Thanks for the feedback!

Just an update I'm working on making this less annoying! Would a smaller video player that showed up farther down in posts be better? I asked my ad team about removing it entirely but apparently it's the new thing that all advertisers want and would really impact things on my end financially to remove it. That said, I absolutely want you guys to have a user-friendly experience on my blog - thoughts?

I think that's better. The main issue is that it would appear over the main post and then move around the page. It would also start playing automatically. The way it is now is much better!

Oh good, so it's not doing that anymore? I asked them to adjust it to be less obtrusive but couldn't tell if it worked/what they did exactly. Glad to hear that it's less annoying!!

Thank you for asking about the recipe page! It makes me sad when food bloggers ditch recipage in favor of a giant landfill of recipes that are no longer searchable (also, I'm a web designer so I KNOW there are options out there!). Who is going to dig through years of posts? I don't even bother with them if there is no search function. What I loved about recipage was being able to search by ingredient. I'm not a fan of searching by category because if I'm searching for ideas, I want to go straight to recipes I already have most, if not all, of the ingredients for.

I totally agree about searching for specific ingredients. I'm going to make sure that's still an option with what I switch to! Thanks for the feedback!

I like the recipe search page. Maybe an index by ingredient and or cuisine type IE: Latin, Asian, Indian, inspired etc. may help when searching for a recipe to use up an ingredient. I also like a nutrition/ calorie breakdown as I record what I eat in my Fitness Pal and have been doing so for a couple years. It really works for me to keep me on track. I guess I don't trust myself for "intuitive eating." Page from articles where there is a list of possibilities like: the recent one where there were multiple ideas for sandwiches-would be nice if those recipes were printable somehow. I need to refer to that to remind myself of one to try. And as it isn't condensed can't print it. Love your recipes, can depend on them to work. I may use one of them at the next "pot luck" I have to go to where we can do anything but also provide the recipe. I want to make something that they won't see usually.

I've only used the category listing. It's easy to use, but it would be great to have a "back to top" link at the end of each category that would take you back to the category list.

Hi, I enjoy your recipes and your recipe page. Even though I do not manage my diet with any type of calorie counting, I would love to see Nutritional Data for the recipes, even if just 'Recipe-guesstimates'. Thanks for all you do. You are extremely generous with your information, your expertise, and yourself.

Thank you Linda! I appreciate your input! Since I preach intuitive eating, I don't think it's appropriate for me to add calorie counts/nutritional data to my recipes - but I appreciate you reading and your kind words!

Hi Anne! As usual, another great post! My only request when it comes to recipes has to do with an image. I'm a very visual person and I really like having a photo (even if it's small) when I print a recipe. So that would be my only request. Keep up the awesome work!

Hi Anne! The one thing I really like is when bloggers have a "jump to recipe" Button at the top of a blog post. Usually I'm looking at a recipe on my phone while I'm cooking and I hate having to scroll down through the post when I'm trying to look at ingredients or directions real quick. As far as the recipe page, I'd recommend something like what Iowa Girl Eats has. I feel like I can always find what I'm looking for with her recipe search page!
