Weekend Adventures: Puppy Edition

Hello my friends! Matt and I had a fun weekend – all our travels were awesome, but it’s nice to be home. 🙂 Our weekend centered around some fun adventures with our new pup, plus getting things done around the house!

On Friday, we met up with our friend Shane and took our puppy Ashe out to dinner at Rockland’s BBQ. We want to work on her social skills (she’s pretty shy with strangers) and the outdoor seating at this place is really casual and dog friendly – perfect!

She was a little nervous when we first got there (so many people!!) but after a few minutes she settled in and watched the action from under the table.

On Saturday morning, Matt got up with Ashe and let me sleep a bit longer – what a guy! He had some work emails to catch up on so it worked out well, and I was really wiped from the week/pregnancy and happy to get some extra zzz’s!

I dragged myself out of bed around 9 and made us pancakes using our favorite Simple Mills gluten free mix! I added some chia seeds to the batter and put bananas in them while they cooked, too.

Breakfast is served! Plus a pat of butter (in between cakes) maple syrup, and some fresh strawberries. These were soooo good! I added some plain whole milk Greek yogurt to mine after I took this photo – tasted good with it and added some more protein too!

After the feast, we headed out for another social adventure! One of my favorite coffee shops, Java Shack, is next door to a pet store, and we needed to get some more food for Zara anyway – perfect! We brought Ashe along and grabbed lattes (half caf for me) before taking a nice long walk.

When we got back home it was lunchtime, so I whipped us up another feast – goat cheese scrambled eggs (plus dill – my fave – and a little parsley) with side salads. Plus a savory waffle topped with some avocado that we shared, and fresh cherries for dessert. 🙂

Zara has gotten braver and is venturing upstairs again – hooray! This is what she was up to while we were eating – how this is comfortable, I do not know. Lol!

Then it was off for another adventure – it was beautiful out so we wanted to take advantage! We met up with Shane again plus our friends Heather and Mike and their puppy Banana who is best friends with Ashe by this point – they love playing together! On the agenda: a hike!

windy run hike with dogs

We headed to Windy Run, a small trail that takes you along the Potomac and has some fun rock scrambling. It was perfect – not too intense and the pups had a blast!

So much fun – everyone was tired and happy afterwards. Matt and I showered up, left the pup at home, and treated ourselves to dinner out.

I recently discovered that eel rolls, my favorite sushi rolls, are actually cooked – as are some of the other offerings at most sushi places. Amazing!! I’ve really been missing sushi, so I requested we hit Sushi Rock, one of our local faves.

We shared some edamame to start and then shared a few cooked rolls, including my beloved eel. 🙂 Hit the spot! It’s so nice to not feel crazy nauseous at dinnertime anymore – I’m actually starting to enjoy food again, hooray!! I’ll share a pregnancy update later this week, btw, so stay tuned! Almost 16 weeks now! (In case you missed it: here’s the announcement post, here’s a 1st trimester Q&A post, and whether our baby is a girl or boy!)

We all slept hard on Saturday night and were up and ready to get things done on Sunday – Matt and I had a lot of to do items on our list! First order of business: tire out the pup. We took her for a little run around the neighborhood! We are still working on her leash skills but she’s getting better and seemed to enjoy the run. I did, too – one of the first runs in awhile I’ve actually felt good/had energy. Must be because I finally caught up on sleep and got over jetlag this week! I’m hoping it also the magical 2nd trimester energy return – I’ve missed my normal energy!

running while pregnant

We probably did about 2.5 or 3 hilly and slow miles which is just about perfect for me right now. 🙂

After showering, having a snack (I had one before the run, too), and getting some things done around the house, we headed out to run errands, with one of the big stops being Home Depot to get a new microwave. There’s a Chipotle next door so that was our logical choice for lunch – neither of us felt like cooking and we didn’t have a ton left in the fridge!

chipotle lunch

Brown rice, black beans, chicken, salsa, guac, lettuce. Yum!

The rest of the day was spent getting things done! We did Home Depot, hit the grocery store, and then came home and did all sorts of chores around the house. Felt good to get things back in order.

Dinner was simple: Matt grilled us some sausages and we had them with sauerkraut and side salads. I had a bowl of cereal an hour before dinner so I wasn’t hungry for much else – perfect!

Such a fun and productive weekend. I’m definitely tired this morning – I’m working from a coffee shop right now and looking forward to a mellow lunchtime yoga class before heading home to walk Ashe and finish out the workday from there.

Before I go, I wanted to share something a little sponsored shout out that I think you local readers will be really excited about: check out my new favorite summer running/walking/hiking/being outside tank top! “Home is where the humidity is” – perfect for DC, right?! It’s technical material, too, so perfect for wicking that sweat. 😉

home is where the humidity is tank

I know many of you are also runners who have trained for races through our hot summers (training for Marine Corps Marathon last summer was ROUGH… it stayed hot forever last year), so this technical racer back tank couldn’t be more perfect.

Here’s a close up of the design – cute, right?

HomeHumidity_FINAL2_Outline

It comes in a soft and cozy (not technical) tee shirt, too, if you’re looking to show off your DC pride while not working out. 🙂

The shirts are on pre-order right now through District Line Co., a cute local t-shirt company that my friend Lisa owns. The pre-sale closes Wednesday, so act fast if you want one – they are limited release and might not be available again later. Use the code fANNEtasticHumidity at checkout for 15% off on pre-sale orders for the Humidity tanks or regular tee. The discount code will stop working at midnight on Wednesday, 6/7.

Have a great day guys! Stay tuned for more Iceland recaps, a pregnancy update, and a fun summery chili recipe later this week, too!

Omg it was way past time!! We kept putting it off because of Iceland but it's such a pain not having one, especially for my 90 second rice and microwave oatmeal addictions!

What a great way to get Ashe into socializing with people. And it's a great thing she wants to hang out under the table and just keep looking around. Will make going out to eat with her so much easier.

Ashe is so cute! How old is she? Our pup Olive was super shy when we first got her and WOOFs in Ballston has a free puppy socialization every Saturday morning that really helped! It's literally like 20 puppies running around together, it's the most adorable thing and really helped Olive's confidence. If she is older than 16 weeks, definitely take her there for training or daycare which has also really helped Olive come out of her shell with people and other dogs.

She's almost 6 months! We actually just signed up for WOOFS for their puppy training classes! We'll have to check out their socialization class, too! She tends to do really well with other dogs but is super shy with people, which is interesting. Definitely getting better already, though!

What a wonderful family and fun filled weekend! It's so great that Ashe is as active as you and Matt are, and that she's so well behaved at restaurants and out on the trails! I think you definitely deserve a slower Monday to catch up on some rest from your busy weekend!

Ashe is so cute and seems so well behaved! You may want to check with your vet on taking the puppy running. My husband was surprised when our vet told us to wait a few more months to take our 6 month old hound puppy running. Something to do with hip development. Can't wait for your pregnancy update!

Oh interesting! We will check on that - thanks! She loves running around with other dogs for ages so I figure running with us for a couple miles is probably similar, but good to be sure!

Yes, make sure you check with your vet! Ashe running around with pups is different than continuous running with you. We only want the best for that cutie :)
